Ducks on Rails

Introduction

I created this website as a side project of my master thesis at NIOO (Netherlands Institute of Ecology) in coorperation with Kennispunt Bètawetenschappen Utrecht University, Eendenkooi Stichting, The Dutch Group for Ringing in Duck Decoys (Werkgroep Ringwerk Eendenkooien Nederland, WREN) and The Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development and Innovation.

The website shows some basic information as well as maps of where the ducks have been going since the early 20th century. You can even follow some individuals in detail.

I obtained the data from the Dutch Center for Avian Migration and Demography (Vogeltrekcentrum Arnhem). The most important tools I used are Ruby on Rails, GMT - The Generic Mapping Tools, MySQLand the Google Chart API. I will release the source code in some open source licence later. The data is owned by the Vogeltrekstation and can be obtained from them. More information and the source code can be found on Google Code.
